exposed hibernaculum

Food Plant: Artemisia vulgaris (Mugwort), A.abrotanum (Southernwood)

Mine: August-May

Notes: Feeds at first in the rootstock and overwinters there , fully fed. It makes an emergence hole prior to hibernation just above the rootstock and covers it with silk and stem fragments and it is within this hibernaculum that it hibernates. Tenanted stem may be found as they readily break off, at the level of the emergence hole, exposing the hibernaculum (as shown).
