37.072 Coleophora otidipennella (Hübner, [1817])
< back | next >
feeds on wood-rush

Food Plant: Luzula campestris (Field wood-rush), L.multifora (Heath wood-rush)

Egg: laid at the base of a flower or fruit

Mine: June-April

Notes: The larva initially feeds on seeds. The fully formed case, by July, is 5.5-6mm long and is trivalved, pale brown, with grains of vegetable material incorporated into the dorsal surface anteriorally. It then leaves the foodplant to commence diapause. It resembles the Juncus-feeding Coleophorid cases, but C.alticolella feeds later in the year (sometimes on Field wood-rush) and C.glaucicolella may feed on Heath wood-rush in May and early June. Widepread and locally common throughout Britain. Formerly C.murinipennella.

National Status: Local

Bradley No: 578

Data: 06.vii.2016, East Ruston Common, East Norfolk, VC27
