535 Coleophora ibipennella (Zeller, 1849)
< back | next >
the case is black and pistol shaped

Food Plant: Quercus spp.(Oaks)

Mine: September to October, feeding again from April to May or mid-June.

Notes: Larva mines leaves until the case is formed, then grazes on the lower surface of leaves until diapause. Spring feeding is in leaf-buds, then on male catkins, and occasionally excising leaf-cuticle to extend the case. The full-grown case is black, pistol-shaped, 7mm long (as shown). The presence of window feeding - see below the case - can show the presence of the larva on the leaf.
