Food Plant: Daucus carota (Wild Carrot) , Peucedanum officinale (Hog's Fennel) ,Conium maculatum (Hemlock), Crithmum maritmum (Rock samphire) Mine: September-May Notes: Feeds initially on the spun flowers and seeds then, in late autumn, bores into the lower part of the stem and burrows downwards through the pith. In the spring the larvae return to the top of the stem and their presence may be detected by slight frass exudations from the entrance hole. Larval feeding signs at axil on stem of Daucus carota. Some of the frass extruded from the entry hole, and the side-stem have been removed here to clearly show the entry hole. Data: 28.ix.2022, Dungeness, Kent, VC15 Image:© Will Langdon |
